Saying no without feeling guilty

Every yes is a no to something else. How to learn to choose, without it feeling like letting someone down.

Luchtballon boven de boomtoppen

"Could you just pick this up?" It's a small question, and you say yes before you've thought about it. Tonight you work late. Tomorrow again.

Saying no is hard because it feels like disappointing someone. But every yes is also a no: to your own work, to your evening, to the people at home. You're always choosing. The only question is whether you do it consciously.

Buy time

The most important step is the smallest: don't answer straight away. "Let me check my calendar and get back to you this afternoon." That gives you room to think instead of react.

Say no to the request, not to the person

"I'd love to help, but this week won't work" is very different from "no". You show you take the other person seriously, and you're still clear.

Offer an alternative, if you want to

  • "That won't work, but next Tuesday will."
  • "I can't do it, but Sanne knows a lot about this."
  • "If I pick this up, something else has to wait. What takes priority?"

That last one is gold with your manager. You don't say no, you make the choice visible.

Bear the discomfort

The first no feels heavy. The second a little less. Usually the other person has forgotten it within an hour, while you carry it around all evening. That discomfort is the price of your boundary, and the price gets lower every time.
